These Roads Won’t Build Themselves: Software Engineering at Infotech
Engineering is a creative profession. It might not be art (we could argue that it is, but that’s a whole other blog post), but building something new out of code or solving problems through Agile thinking – it’s all a form of creativity, sometimes known as innovation.
How does that tie into what we do? Well, our focus has always been centered around innovation in our products and industry so we can provide the best solutions for our customers. Sometimes this means we create a new solution for our Departments of Transportation and contractor users; other times we do this by partnering with industry leaders like Esri, Trimble and Leica to build a best-in-class combined product.
For our engineers, who craft the code that makes what we do possible, our commitment to innovation means a different experience for each individual. To some, it may mean the opportunity to engage in learning new tech they haven’t worked with previously; to others it might mean being able to showcase the skills and tech they’ve become experts in, mentoring and leading in their field.
This approach is key to keeping the challenging and authentic culture of a startup we’ve maintained for more than 45 years – since our company began in a garage in 1977.
Now, the roads and highways of the U.S. won’t build themselves – that’s what Infotech’s software is for, so let’s talk about what it’s like to be on one of those engineering teams. To develop and improve Infotech’s products, software, DevOps, and solutions engineers on our teams and we have two separate divisions to showcase that talent. Those are:
● AASHTOWare Products
● ITI Products
Both divisions have their own separate team structure, goals, and tech stack that they primarily work on, making it easier for our engineers to find the perfect spot on the team for them. So what does that look like?
AASHTOWare Products

“Infotech is constantly innovating. There is always room for growth, to learn and to do more, and the work-life balance is great.” – Baldo Rivera, AASHTOWARE Products Software Engineer
Our AASHTOWare Products division works as the official contractor for its namesake, the American Association for State Highway Transportation Officials, or AASHTO as we call it. Our engineers work to support nearly all state Departments of Transportation by building and maintaining AASHTOWare Project, which is the full suite of software agencies use for infrastructure construction.
Engineer positions in this division give developers world class skill sets; AASHTOWare Project is built on an entity framework, meaning its engineers use tech like .Net, C#, AWS, and JavaScript. The engineers in this division are working within the needs of AASHTO, allowing them to be focused, honing in on innovative solutions to the specific problems they are trying to solve, setting them up well to learn or grow their full stack abilities.
ITI Products

“I genuinely can say that I absolutely love my job, my team, my work, and what I do. Even when the workforce went remote in a pandemic, I still felt the dedicated work ethic, warmth, and open atmosphere from my coworkers through the virtual space…the culture here at Infotech is truly one of a kind.” – Samantha Howe, ITI Products Sr. Software Engineer
ITI Products, which is Infotech’s owned software solutions, is primarily built for local public agencies and engineering firms in the U.S., and with a broader customer base comes a different approach to engineering. There is more creative innovation and discovery for these developers, with a stronger focus on finding the right scope to attract clientele.
Each product in this division works within its own tech, including AWS, Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and more. Depending on an engineer’s specialty (like DevOps or Frontend), they can truly make a difference through the language and stack they are most familiar with and work toward becoming an expert in certain areas of development.
Our engineers are a huge part in the success and innovation of Infotech, as they quite literally help build the roads of the future. (Building the software counts as helping!) They couldn’t do it alone though.
What is tech without people to create a business plan, market the products, run the finances and make sure employees are engaged and excited about work? Every Infotech department is filled with brilliant people working hard to grow and showcase our business, sparking new ideas through cross-collaboration for short projects and annual hackathons. Through years of hard work and creating safe places for different approaches to problem solving, Infotech has become a community of its own.
